There’s nothing quite like a family vacation, spending quality time with those closest to you, exploring new places, and relaxing together. It’s the perfect way to reset and focus on what really matters.
And, if you really want to max out the happiness, Wander can reveal that San Diego, California should be top of your list.

Traffic congestion
Noise pollution
Walkability
Safety scores

San Diego tops our table, scoring highly across several factors. This ensures travelers can experience a blend of outdoor living with family-friendly appeal. And, it’s backed by a high safety score (59.5 – the third highest), giving tourists peace of mind and contributing to the city’s high ranking in our table
Beaches, parks, zoos, and cultural attractions – you name it, San Diego has it – without the intensity and traffic of other Californian hubs, like San Francisco or San Jose.
San Diego is a great destination for families, with 447 child-friendly attractions, including museums, zoos, aquariums, and amusement parks. While the figure of 12.67 per 100,000 reflects its large visitor numbers, the sheer volume of options gives families plenty of variety.
America’s Finest City lives up to its name, topping our list for the following reasons:
22% of the land is dedicated to parks and recreation
A strong safety score of 59.5
Moderate traffic delays at 31.9%
Comfortable average temperatures of 62.1°F
Unlike other parts of California, which struggle with heavy congestion and higher noise levels, San Diego is an East Coast destination that feels expansive and easier to navigate, supporting its high happiness ranking.

Chief of Staff, Mat Kowalewski, recommends… Making the most of family time in San Diego
San Diego is a city that enables families to explore at their own pace. Take Balboa Park, for example, which is home to gardens, museums, and the San Diego Zoo – all within walking distance of each other. Here, you can plan a full day of activities and get your steps in.
I’d also recommend checking out La Jolla – here, you can spot sea lions, explore coastal trails, or enjoy a relaxing day building sandcastles on the beach.
Both areas are less than a 20-minute drive from Wander San Diego Civita, our four-bed property near Interstate 805, making it super easy to explore San Diego by car. The property itself is ideal for large groups and families, thanks to its fire pit and outdoor dining area, perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring.

Orlando is more than theme parks. Much more. It’s one of the most purpose-built vacation cities in America, and the data shows it.
With strong performance across family-friendly attractions, manageable traffic, and a relatively calm noise profile, Orlando delivers what many travelers want – convenience, variety, and structure.
Orlando combines scale with accessibility. With 40.91 child-friendly attractions per 100,000 people, Florida gives families consistent options beyond the headline parks.
Traffic delays are 27.9%, lower than in many larger cities in the ranking, allowing visitors to move between districts without losing large portions of the day.
Despite dedicating only 6% of its land to parks and recreation areas (the joint-lowest on our list), Orlando has some of the US’s most popular kid-friendly attractions, including Universal Studios and Walt Disney World.
Combine this with year-round warm weather (71.8°F average annual temperature) and a solid safety score of 50.8, and O-town performs consistently well across the board.

Chief of Staff, Mat Kowalewski, recommends… Discovering Orlando beyond the theme parks
Orlando is seen as the theme park capital of the world, and while those big-ticket attractions absolutely deliver, some of your family’s happiest vacation moments can take place away from the thrill of the rides.
I recommend building in time for places like Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando, where you can walk along the waterfront, rent swan boats, or take in the skyline from one of the trails. For something more immersive, Leu Gardens has around 50 acres of landscaped greenery that feels a world away from the adrenaline-filled theme parks.
Another option if you’re looking for a day away from Universal or Disney World is The Orlando Eye, which gives you panoramic views across the city and surrounding lakes.
Seeing Orlando from above, especially around sunset, really puts the scale and beauty of the area into context. It’s a reminder that, beyond the rides and roller coasters, Orlando is built around variety, space, and natural beauty.

Sun-soaked, energetic, and packed with things to do, Miami ranks third among the happiest vacation destinations in the US.
The city combines warm weather, strong walkability, and one of the highest concentrations of family-friendly attractions in the country.
Miami performs particularly well for child-friendly activities, with 48.87 attractions per 100,000 people, one of the highest in our entire study.
The city also stands out for scenic access. With 45 lookouts, observation decks, and nature-focused activities per 100,000 residents, you can easily mix beach time with skyline views, parks, and waterfront trails.
Miami’s walkability score of 77, one of the highest in the Top 10, further supports exploration. This makes it easy for the whole family to explore the city, moving between neighborhoods like South Beach, Brickell, and Downtown without relying heavily on transport.
And, when you thought Miami had enough, an average annual temperature of 76°F, means you can make memories year-round.
Chief of Staff, Mat Kowalewski, recommends… Taking a Florida road trip
If you’re visiting Florida, one of the best ways to experience the state is by turning your trip into a road adventure. Start in Miami and enjoy the chilled beachside energy and waterfront parks. While you’re here, you must take a walk through South Pointe Park or along the Art Deco streets of South Beach – the culture here gives you a completely different side of Florida.
From there, head north toward Orlando, where the theme parks and attractions really ramp up the adrenaline and excitement. Beyond the big parks, places like ICON Park and Lake Eola offer a slower pace and great views of the city.
Finally, you can make the journey up to the Gulf Coast, which has some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country. Areas like 30A and Destin are known for their emerald waters, white-sand beaches, and relaxed beach towns.
After the excitement of Orlando and the buzz of Miami, it’s the perfect place to slow the pace and enjoy the scenery.
Minneapolis: 53.7 lookouts, observation decks and towers, and nature and park activities per 100,000 people
One of the clearest differences between the happiest vacation cities and the rest of the list is how easy it is to access scenery.
Cities in the top 10 consistently perform well here. Minneapolis, which ranks sixth overall, records the highest density of scenic lookouts and nature-based activities in the entire dataset, with 53.7 per 100,000 people.
Miami (45.0) and Salt Lake City, Utah (40.9) follow closely, offering frequent opportunities to step outside and enjoy views, parks, or natural landmarks without long travel times or heavy crowds.
New York and Los Angeles rank near the bottom for this metric, with just 5.2 and 5.1 lookouts per 100,000 people, respectively. While both cities are home to world-famous parks and observation decks, the data shows how population scale changes the experience. Demand far outweighs supply, turning iconic sights into scheduled activities rather than easy, spontaneous moments.
Memphis: 19.4% of time lost to traffic
Some of the happiest vacation destinations in our ranking are also among the easiest to explore by car. With lower traffic congestion, these cities can make road trips feel flexible and relaxed, rather than pressurized and tightly scheduled.
Memphis leads the way, with drivers losing just 19.4% of time to traffic delays compared to free-flow conditions. Music City is followed closely by Buffalo (19.7%) and Salt Lake City (21.8%), where getting from one neighborhood, park, or viewpoint to the next feels refreshingly straightforward.
Other top-10 cities also perform well for drive-led trips. Minneapolis (28.3%) and San Diego (31.9%) allow visitors to move easily between cultural districts, waterfronts, and green spaces without long stretches stuck in traffic.
Even larger destinations like Las Vegas (34.1%) and Washington, D.C. (37.3%) remain manageable, making it easier to mix city sights with nearby scenic drives or day trips.
By comparison, popular vacation hubs like Los Angeles (59.8%), San Francisco (49.7%), and New York (48.8%) experience some of the highest traffic delays in the country. These cities attract huge visitor numbers, but congestion significantly eats into vacation time – a factor that consistently drags down happiness scores and helps explain why they sit outside the top 10.
This could also be a sign that taking the road less traveled and heading to a less popular vacation destination may be a good way to maximize happiness on your next getaway.
Salt Lake City: Safety score of 64.4 out of 100
Feeling safe plays a major role in how relaxing a trip is. Salt Lake City recorded the highest safety score, followed by Boston (59.9) and San Diego (59.5). These cities came out on top thanks to lower crime rates and lower perceived risk, which contributed to their consistent performance in the overall rankings.
Even Orlando, which takes first place overall, posts a solid safety score of 50.8, reinforcing its suitability for family-focused travel.
While safety is just one of our ranking factors, it’s obviously an important factor when families are picking vacation destinations.
Chief of Staff, Mat Kowalewski, recommends… Wander Park City Slopes
Around 35 minutes east of Salt Lake City and home to some of the best skiing in North America, Park City, Utah, is an excellent spot for anyone wanting somewhere off the beaten track, but close enough to one of America’s happiest vacation destinations.
Our Summit Park Slopes property gives up to 10 guests a luxury spot to relax and catch their breath after a big day on the snow. And, with a cozy fireplace, hot tub, and BBQ area, this stunning wood cabin has all the ingredients for a vacation to remember.
Miami: 48.87 child-friendly activities per 100,000 people
When it comes to planning a vacation with kids, access matters just as much as variety. And no city delivers greater per-capita access to family-friendly attractions than Miami.
With 48.87 museums, water parks, amusement parks, zoos, and aquariums per 100,000 people, Miami ranks first in child-friendly activity density.
With so many attractions to choose from, Miami makes it easy for families to fill their itineraries without traveling far between experiences – a big contributor to Miami’s high finish in our overall rankings.
It’s also no surprise that Orlando (40.91 per 100,000), with some of the world’s most famous theme parks, follows closely behind. With more than 200 child-friendly attractions across the city, Orlando continues to deliver a huge range of experiences for visitors of all ages.
Elsewhere, cities like San Francisco (33.84 per 100,000), Atlanta (31.92), and Salt Lake City (30.76) also perform well, with a strong mix of museums, nature parks, and interactive attractions.
New York actually has the highest number of child-friendly attractions in our table, with 1,453; however, the Big Apple’s high number of visitors means these activities are spread more thinly and likely to be busier – something that can be difficult to navigate with young kids.
Miami: 76.3°F, the warmest average annual temperature
Las Vegas: 30%, the lowest average annual humidity
Roy Ayers wasn’t wrong when he said everybody loves the sunshine, but the happiest vacation cities tend to strike a balance between warmth and comfort.
Miami (76.3°F) is the warmest city in the top 10, but its strong showing is supported by high walkability and a high number of child-friendly activities (48.87).
Elsewhere, Tampa (72.5°F) and Las Vegas (68.5°F) also deliver warmth without extreme humidity, helping visitors stay active without feeling drained.
At the cooler end, cities like Minneapolis (46.2°F), Buffalo (49°F), and Salt Lake City (49.5°F) still rank highly overall. Their success highlights that temperature alone doesn’t define happiness — especially when lower heat is paired with easy access to nature, manageable traffic, and quieter surroundings.
It’s not just the temperature that can affect a holiday destination, though. Las Vegas stands out with an average humidity of just 30%, the lowest in the top 10, creating a dry, comfortable climate that supports longer days out. By comparison, many cities that fall outside the top 10 combine warmth with higher humidity, making travel and activities more physically demanding.
Buffalo, New York: Scored 37 on the noise pollution index
Noise is one of the most subtle but influential factors shaping holiday happiness.
In the top 10, Buffalo records the lowest noise pollution score in the entire ranking (37.0), followed by Tampa (41.5) and Sacramento (45.5). These cities benefit from calmer evenings and more restful downtime, even when staying centrally.
Cities like Salt Lake City (47.8) and Minneapolis (50.3) sit in the middle, striking a balance between city energy and quiet residential areas.
By contrast, New York (69.1) and Los Angeles (65.9) are among the loudest cities overall. Combined with congestion and high visitor numbers, constant background noise can erode the sense of escape travelers seek, helping explain why these globally popular destinations fail to crack the top 10 happiest vacation cities.
The data shows that the happiest vacation cities aren’t necessarily the most famous. Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., Salt Lake City, Miami, and Minneapolis perform well because they balance attraction density with accessibility. Our top 10 happiest vacation destinations score highly for walkability, wellness, manageable traffic, and access to nature at a scale that works for visitors.
Meanwhile, cities like New York and Los Angeles remain culturally significant and popular, but their lower scores across congestion, noise, and per-capita access help explain why popularity doesn’t always translate into a more satisfying vacation experience.
Planning your next vacation? Consider staying away from the crowds and taking the road less traveled…who knows where you’ll end up.
